1. Membership and Facilities
We're pleased to announce that all our facilities are now open and available for booking! Equipment, our Chemical Darkroom and Digital Darkroom are all booked through the website at www.ubuphotosoc.com. Log in using the username and password you were sent at signup, then links for each will appear in the left hand menu. Just follow the instructions from there!
To use any of the facilities you'll need your membership card. These can be collected at any of our events - just turn up and ask!
We had a slight hiccup with Paypal recently and as a result many of you weren't automatically marked as paid on our website on signup. We've now fixed the issue and made sure everyone who should be is marked as paid. If you have paid and still can't access the website do please contact web@ubuphotosoc.com so we can investigate and sort it out for you.

2. Join us on Social Media
We have a wide range of ways you can interact with us and other members on social media. They can be a little confusing when you first join, so here's a quick rundown:
Our Facebook Page is for announcements, events and where we'll post things like competition photos. facebook.com/ubuphotosoc
We also have a Facebook Group - this is where all the action happens! Here we'll post updates and things we think you'll find interesting in the world of photography. It's somewhere you can ask questions and have discussions with committee and all our other members. Most importantly, it's where you can share your photography with everyone else! facebook.com/groups/ubuphotosoc
We then have several more niche groups for specific areas of photography.
The Darkroom Group for all things darkroom and film. facebook.com/groups/UoBDarkroom
The Studio Group for everything portraiture and lighting. facebook.com/groups/UoBStudio
And finally the Events Team Group, where you can get involved with the world of paid photography. We offer training and this is where paid opportunities will be posted. facebook.com/groups/UoBEventsTeam
Finally, no self-respecting photographic society should be without an Instagram account. We post regular photos of what we get up to - and if you tag us, or use #bristolphotosoc , in your uploads we'll repost our favourites to help get your work out there! @uob_photosoc

3. Talk 2: A Technical Intro to Photography - 1.68 Queens Building - 6:30pm, 16th Oct
This week's talk by Jamie Corbin will focus on the technical fundamentals of photography.
As with last week's talk, this is definitely one beginners will benefit hugely from, but chances are more advanced photographers will learn something too. We'll look at how shutter speed, aperture, ISO and white balance work together to create the overall exposure and how they affect the look of your photos. We'll also cover some of the basics of different types of cameras, lenses and how they work. Some of this will be done as live demos, so please be ready to heckle Jamie when it all goes wrong!

4. Next Tea Social - Boston Tea Party, Park Street - 5pm, 24th Oct
We hope all of you that came to this week's Tea Social enjoyed yourselves and had fun meeting the committee and other members!
This year we're running our Tea Socials fortnightly so the next will be on the 24th Oct and from now on we'll always be in the Park Street Boston Tea Party.

5. Westonbirt Trip - Meeting at Bristol SU - 9am-6pm, 27th Oct (Save the Date)
Save the date for our first trip of the year - we're off to Westonbirt Arboretum!
The best way to describe Westonbirt is it's a zoo for trees. The Victorians loved collecting things and the owners of Westonbirt turned it into a huge park for as many varieties of tree as they could find. With Autumn now well underway this trip is a great opportunity to go out and take some photos of all the seasonal colours. Especially beautiful are the extensive collection of Japanese Maples around the arboretum, which at this time of year are simply incredible!
Beginners can group together with committee members if they want a hand with their cameras and we usually run several different workshops throughout the day (details TBC). More advanced photographers are welcome to join in or do their own thing - it's entirely up to you.
It's a full day away - we usually leave around 9am from the SU and return by 6pm. Warm clothing and good footwear are a must. There are numerous places to buy food for lunch there, or you can bring your own. We're still finalising transport and costs, but those will be announced and bookings opened soon!

7. Competition - Week 3: The Park (Landscape) - Submission Deadline: 21st Oct
Bristol is a city full of parks. Whether it's the Downs on the trek home in first year; the small squares and gardens hidden between streets; sports being played at Coombe Dingle; festivals at Eastville or the sweeping estates of Ashton Court - you're never more than a few minutes away from the nearest patch of greenery! (And let's not forget the skate park under the M32!)
The aim here is to shoot a landscape photo of - or in - one of them. Have fun exploring!
Submission Deadline: 21/10/18
Send in your entries as jpg files, at as high a quality as possible, to competitions@ubuphotosoc.com

8. Open Committee Positions
We have a few positions on the Committee that need to be filled. They've already been advertised in the first email that went out and at our first few events - a huge thank you to those who have expressed interest already! This is a final call if anyone else would like to run before we have a quick vote before our next talk on Tuesday 16th October.
The open positions are:
* President - in charge of the day to day running of the society.
* Talks - organises internal and external speakers for our Tuesday talks and sets up longer, hands-on teaching workshops.
* Socials - organises our regular Tea Social, local photowalks and any other gathering you want to organise.
* Studio - looks after our extensive lighting kit, helps organise lighting workshops and arranges studio kit lending to members.
* Sponsorship - we love to get you shiny new toys to play with and this role is key in getting that external support to do so.
If you are interested in running for any of these roles drop a line to president@ubuphotosoc.com with a short introduction to yourself, what position you're interested in getting involved with and why.
---------------------------------
As you can see, there's a huge amount happening over the next few weeks. We hope you come along and look forward to meeting you!
